DIDIM
Didim
is shaped as a peninsula surrounding
Mugla on the east coast. The huge inlet
of Akbuk town from the Aegean sea on the
west and east coast, with Lake Bafa and
the Menderes River on the northern
coast, 106 km's to the provenience of
Aydin, 53 km' to Söke town, 73 km's to
Kusadasi, 110 km's to Bodrum. Spread to
300 km2. of area. About 15 years ago,
the people from large cities around
Turkey such as Istanbul, Ankara and
Izmir, first came to Altinkum and
started to build their own summer houses
& holiday homes. when Turkey's economy
started to decline those people found it
very hard to survive in the big cities
and most of them, who were mainly
retired, decided to move into the
smaller resorts such as Altinkum.
Today’s Didim stretches from the Apollo
temple at the ancient town of Didyma
(meaning the twin brother and sister
Apollo & Artemis). The area was known
as"Yoran" (name derives from Yeuwani)
and the locals named it “hisar” meaning
castle as it used to look like a
fortress, until the biggest earthquake
in 1955-1956. Just after the earthquake,
the government supported locals by
building them modern concrete houses
down on the south west part of the old
civilization and named it "Yenihisar",
meaning "yeni: new" + "hisar: castle".
In those days, Akköy was the biggest
town and the people of Yenihisar used to
go to the market town of Söke for their
weekly shopping. Due to the tourist
explosion, Didim has rapidly become a
popular holiday resort. The once poor
owners of the unfertile tobacco fields
are now local businessmen and you will
find them running hotels, restaurants &
bars etc.. Didim, is now completely
changed and an ever increasing number of
tourists each year visit these shores to
sample its Turkish delights.
The lively local market of Didim is held
on Saturdays and can be visited by local
transport (Dolmus) from Altinkum town
centre. This runs every 5 minutes or it
is a very pleasant walk taking roughly
25 minutes.
Boat trips are organized daily along the
harbor in the summer season (beginning
of May) and you can explore natural
coves and bays or simply relax on the
deck under a clear blue sky. You will
also find various water sports, diving
courses, fishing tours and horse riding
excursions.
You can either explore this fascinating
place by hire car or take one of the
organized tours to Lake Bafa, Akköy
village, Didyma - Miletos - Priene, Söke
Market, Kusadasi Market, Bodrum,
Ephesus, Pamukkale, Aphrodisias, Dalyan
or even the Virgin Mary’s house.
Alternatively, you could always indulge
yourself in designer shopping!

AKBUK
Akbuk is a charming place overlooked
by majestic green mountains and facing the calm and
blue waters of the Aegean Sea. It is an increasingly
popular destination for foreigners because of its
relaxed atmosphere, quiet beaches and stunning
backdrop of mountain forests.

Akbuk has become a rising trend on
the real estate industry with its natural
environment as well as its history. Many years ago
Akbük was a small town where all the local fishermen
caught delicious Aegean sea bass, but now has its
growing tourism, with holiday complexes as well as
summer houses, villas, harbour, and hotels. Akbuk
became a township in 1991 and is developing quite
nicely just as planned. Most of the infrastructural
work has been completed. Clean roads, beautiful and
very calm beaches welcome you to Akbuk as it is an
ideal resort for those who love to spend quiet and
peaceful times. Many people who visit Akbük from the
big cities often decide to stay here after their
retirement.
The
economy related tourism in recent years has made it
possible for the local fishermen's boats to operate
boat trips along the coasts of Akbuk for the
duration of the summer months. During your visit to
Akbuk, the chapel on the coast line close to the
town centre is very well preserved and can be
visited as it is open to the public. There are 3
star hotels and also one 4 star hotel, along with
one resort for French tour operators rated at 5
stars. There are also small pensions & motels
available to rent during the summer season.
Restaurants by the sea, serve delicious fish and
local food, which are at very reasonable prices. |
